History of Photography â⬠Humanities Essay
History of Photography ââ¬â Humanities Essay Free Online Research Papers History of Photography Humanities Essay The Early Days Photography was first used by Sir John Herschel in 1839. This was also the year the photographic process was made public. Prior to 1839 about ten individuals had tried to make a photograph, however only four were successful. They were: Joseph Nicephore Niepce, Louis J.M. Daguerre, Hippolyte Bayard and William Henry Talbot from England. All of them used techniques which had been known for some time but hadnââ¬â¢t before been successful. The first technique was optical. Scientists had previously discovered that light passing through a small hole in a darkroom projects an inverted image on the opposite wall. The hole was replaced by something which makes the image sharper and brighter. This was called a lens. By the eighteenth century the dark room was replaced by a portable box. The next technique was chemical. During 1727, Johann Heinrich Schulze found out that the right chemicals turned dark when exposed to light. The first attempt to use these chemicals to make the image was unsuccessfully made by Thomas Wedgwood in the 1800s. The Daguerreotype which was bought by the French and made public on 19 August 1839, produced a picture on metal. In comparison the Calotype, which was invented by Talbot in 1840, produced a negative photo on paper. A positive of the picture was made on a sheet of chemically sensitized paper. This was an advantage because any number of positives could be made from the one negative. MASS PRODUCTION Frederick Scott Archerââ¬â¢s process substituted glass for Talbotââ¬â¢s method. The mass production of Albumen Prints of very fine detail was possible. Until 1880 this method was in popular demand for portraits and strange places. Most of the 19th century photographs were in this category. THE MODERN CAMERA The Kodak camera which was first introduced in 1888 caused huge changes to the world of photography. The camera was preloaded with film for up to 100 photos. When you finished the film, the whole camera was returned to the factory were the film was developed, printed and the camera was reloaded. The camera cost just $1.00, while each roll of film was only 10 cents. The first optical range finder came onto the market during 1916. The Super Kodak 620 was introduced in 1938. This was a very expensive snapshot camera because the exposure control method was fully automated. World War II however stopped production of these cameras. The process of automatic functions on most cameras was completed in the late 1970s. This was when the first generation of ââ¬Å"point and shootâ⬠cameras appeared to the general public. These cameras were so easy to use even a beginner photographer could take decent pictures. Imaging with photographs began with the invention of a large box where light could produce images. Photography itself began with photographers inserting silver coated glass plates into large boxes. They discovered that chemicals reacted with the silver plates that could create an opposite image when treated with other various chemicals. Using specialized paper with more chemicals could produce the positive photographs. Many of the pictures of Abraham Lincoln were produced through this time-consuming process. It became necessary for many photographers to find a simpler process. The next major step in photography was the invention of film. A lot of the early processes still used today employed the loading of large cameras with large amounts of film. During World War II cameras became more like they are today. The single lens reflex allowed photographers more opportunity to focus and choose images that were in the distance. The Polaroid camera was invented around the 1960s and this made it even easier for the hobbyist by having one sheet of paper, which could be pulled out and developed instantly after the photo was taken. Silicon chips were added to the cameras and this automatically controlled the shutter speed, focus and lighting. Around the 1980s nearly every home had at least one camera. Today, the choices of camera for both the amateur and professional are endless, from expensive for the professionals to the disposable camera. Digital cameras are also available. They produce images ready for web sites and are also instant so you can view the photo you just took on the LCD screen. Most photo developers offer a choice of either prints, slides or on a CD-Rom so you can edit your photos taken with a digital camera. The variables in the survey Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The variables in the survey - Essay Example Such would be the areas that would need attention in order to beat competition. The column significance F has the associated P-value. If it is > 0.05, then, at significance level 0.05, we do not reject the H0 that in the equation y = Ã ²1Ã + Ã ²2Ã x, Ã ²2 = 0 as this would not be the case. In our case we have 9.69379E-08. 2.222498604 represents the Y intercept and 0.27006447 gives us the independent variable. That means that an increase in bargain sales by 1 unit causes attitude towards the mall to change by 0.27006447. The column significance F has the associated P-value. If it is > 0.05, then, at significance level 0.05, we do not reject the H0 that in the equation y = Ã ²1Ã + Ã ²2Ã x, Ã ²2 = 0 as this would not be the case. In our case we have 0.000648 hence we reject the H0 as this is The Normal Distribution plot for both variable 21 and 25 show points that fit in the normal line. That indicates that the data is normally distributed. The residual plots for both variables also show a random pattern of the points which indicates a fit for a linear model. That shows that there exists a linear relationship between these variables and the attitude formation. On the other hand, the Histograms show a truncated curve, with the peak near the edge. The histograms trail off gently to the left side indicating that part of the distribution has been removed during review. The column significance F has the associated P-value. If it is > 0.05, then, at significance level 0.05, we do not reject the H0 that in the equation y = Ã ²1Ã + Ã ²2Ã x, Ã ²2 = 0 as this would not be the case. In our case we have 0.072269 hence we do not reject the H0 as this is > 0.05. The column significance F has the associated P-value. Rhet writing homework Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Rhet writing homework - Essay Example While Europe was busy slaughtering animals potentially infected with Foot-and-Mouth disease and Mad Cow Disease, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tried to curb the outbreak of BSE in the U.S. by expediting new rules that prohibited the use of certain proteins in cattle feeds (Schlosser 272). Stakeholders fought the FDAââ¬â¢s decision arguing that the bodyââ¬â¢s linking of the animal diseases to human infections was ââ¬Å"totally unsupported by any scientific evidenceâ⬠(Schlosser 273). They, therefore, somehow found a way to bring British meat into the American market. What followed was the death of ten young people who had contracted a previously unknown ailment but later called new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), which effectively destroyed their brains. Some of the victims had been ââ¬Å"keen consumers of beef burgerâ⬠(Schlosser 199). This disease was later established to be the human form of BSE. Indeed, Meat packing companies are effectively sh own to play a crucial role in spreading these forms of pathogens. The conditions of work in most of the meat packing companies do not allow for aseptic handling of these products. As such, the meat is often contaminated with pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli among others (Schlosser 202). Their tendency to ignore the swabbing and testing of the meat products for these pathogens before distribution to the market, as required by law, is seen as the main loophole through which pathogens get to end-point consumers. Their argument, of course, has to do with the economics of performing these procedures, which had previously condemned thousands of tons of meat products. Perhaps the most captivating was the rejection of Bauer Meats, with the government declaring them ââ¬Å"unfit for human consumption,â⬠after an eleven-years-old child got seriously ill (Schlosser 219). However, the most recent scandal involving the meatpacking industry has to do with the detection of Horse meat in Finduââ¬â¢s beef Lasagna. According to the FSA, ââ¬Å"Findus analyzed 18 of its beef lasagna meals and found 11 contained between 60% and 100% horsemeatâ⬠(Sky News). Investigations revealed that it was a case of mislabeling, a role that is entirely undertaken in the meatpacking companies. Consequently, Finduââ¬â¢s 320g, 360g and 500g meals were withdrawn from supermarket shelves (Sky News). Crime in the Meat packing companies do not end there though. Approximately over a century after Upton Sinclair discredited that apparently large slaughterhouse complex in Chicago as a ââ¬Å"jungle,â⬠numerous studies have been conducted. These studies have documented numerous negative effects of slaughterhouses on workers and communities (Fitzgerald, Kalof, and Dietz 1). Starting from the poor working conditions in these companies to the unnatural acts that happened behind their walls, meat packing companies participate in criminal activities that negatively affect the socie ty. Indeed, most of the workers interviewed in Fast Food Nation confirm that this is the worst job an individual can be doing. Reiterating that meat packing companies always operated on profit margins, these workers quoted the 1999 survey that established injury rates in these companies as being ââ¬Å"â⬠¦26.7 per 100 hundred workers. For the rest of U.S. manufacturing, it was 9.2 per hundred workersâ⬠(Schlosser 172). The injuries mainly resulted from the sharp knives whole the ailments resulted from the cold working

Civil service and economic freedom Essay Example for Free
Civil service and economic freedom Essay Around a decade ago, Hong Kong became the hottest topic not because of some festival but rather due to a political event. On July 1, 1997, the sovereignty of Hong Kong was officially transferred to the Peoples Republic of China from the United Kingdom. The Handover, as it is most often called, signaled the official end of British rule on the colony. At present, Hong Kong is one of the top financial centers of the world. It cannot be denied however that the handover was a significant event in its history. It is therefore important to keep in mind that in studying the history of Hong Kong and learning about the place, one has to give emphasis on this event. One resource to read is a paper written by Ming K. Chan titled, ââ¬Å"The Legacy of the British Administration of Hong Kong: A View from Hong Kong,â⬠published in The China Quarterly in 1997. In the paper, Chan gives his insights on four major contributions by the British to Hong Kong as cited by Christopher Patten, the last British Governor of the colony. The four major contributions are rule of law, democratization, civil service and economic freedom. Chan uses these four points raised as his starting points in discussing the legacies of the British. Chan however does not stop merely at describing what these legacies are but goes on to show its weaknesses and flaws. Under the rule of law for example, he states that the legal system implemented by the British in Hong Kong was, like most legal system, aimed at providing fair and equal justice to every citizen. These same laws though turned out to be not only draconian in nature but also discriminatory. Specifically laws that were said to be anti-Chinese thus failing to achieve the aim that it was designed to give. One example of its failure is that during the British rule, English and not Chinese was the preferred language used by courts. As a result, even if the courts practiced a jury system, only those who were able to attain a higher education were able to serve. In effect, this implies that the jury system failed because it did not represent the society in general. The paper also contests the idea that Hong Kong had economic freedom. The paper admits that while Hong Kong did achieve a world class status, the British still intervened in matters that carried significant importance. The principle of laissez-faire, while a good economic concept, was instead misused to the point that it covered up unfair practices by the government. An example is the rule requiring the use of motor vehicles manufactured by the British public buses. While civil service has always been considered as the foundation of British rule, the reality in Hong Kong is that the state of the civil service system is not as efficient as it seems. The paper considers this as somewhat ironic since the localization of the civil service only when the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed. The paper further cites that with the hierarchy being led by people who have little or no understanding of China or even the Chinese community in Hong Kong, their effectiveness as administrators is rather lessened. The biggest failure though is under the British civil service system, those in power failed to participate in the issue of the reintegration.

Java vs C :: Essays Papers
Java vs C1 Java or C++ ââ¬â Which is Better for Businesses? Today, the world is changing fast in many ways, and the most rapid change that is seen within our society is technology. It is imperative that businesses stay on top of what is new and how they can better their companyââ¬â¢s outlook by presenting their information in the fastest and most reliable ways. With the two major computer programming languages of today, C++ and Java, which is better for businesses to be able to acquire such speed and consistency? For years, C++ (C Plus Plus) has dominated the business market place for many different companies and has allowed many computer programmers to obtain vast amounts of knowledge and experience since 1972 when it was first developed by Dennis Ritchie of AT&T Bell Laboratories (Lambert / Nance Page 16). It has been in use for almost thirty years ââ¬â not to mention the years before when itââ¬â¢s precursor C was developed and commonly used also ââ¬â and has made a great impact on the development of software for businessââ¬â¢ across the world. It has become a second nature programming language to those that use it and have been forced to stay with C++. The programming language C++ can be used in many ways. It has exploded into the gaming community allowing PC game programmers to have access to a stabile, yet powerful, programming language, utilizing as little code as possible. It has also been used in other commercial software, such as word processors, audio players, screen savers, and other computer desktop tools. Recently C++ has made its way into the Internet community. Grandparents and Grandchildren Relationships Essay
There are many benefits that can be enjoyed as a result of the relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren. The benefits that can result from such relationships are loving companionship, the grandchildren gain mentors, and the grand parents can educate the grandchildren on the family history as well as their culture. It is therefore clear that the grandchildren can gain more knowledge from their relationship with their grandparents. According to Weston &Qu (2009, p. 59), there are many roles that the grandparents can play on their grandchildren growth. However, their ability to perform these roles is dependent on the relationship that exists between the grandparents and the grandchildren. One important role that the grandparents can play in the growth of the grandchildren is teaching them their history and their culture. Therefore, from this relationships the grandchildren gains historians and educators. Another important role that the grandparents can play on the growth of their grandchildren is mentoring them. Children require mentorship in order to avoid making some mistakes such as engaging in immoral behaviors. As a result of these relationships, children develop life skills on activities which can be performed during their leisure times. Grandparents also can gain some benefits from their relationships with their grandchildren. For instance, some grandparents use their parenting skills in grand parenting in order to prove to their children that they are good parents as a result of their years of experience (Mader, 2007, p. 1). Further, this relationship offers the grandparents with an opportunity to be involved in their grandchildrenââ¬â¢s lives. As a result of the various benefits identified on the relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren, such relationships are very import ant to the grandparents as well as to their grandchildren. Whereas the grandchildren gain historians, mentors and educators, the grandparents get an opportunity to be involved in their grandchildrenââ¬â¢s lives. References Mader, S.L. (2007). Sexuality Sexuality And Sexuality - 1249 Words
Sexuality Sexuality affects people through defining who they are and how they express themselves. People experience sexuality in a wide range whereby some people get considered as very sexual while others do not experience feelings of sexual attraction at all (Darroch et al. 205). The sexuality of a Person can get influenced by culture, family, media, religion, experiences, and friends. No matter how sexuality gets considered important to a person, each has desires, thoughts, values and attractions that are considered unique. Every personââ¬â¢s sexuality is different, and it is not as simple as straight or gay. Some individuals only get attracted to one sex while others get attracted to a diverse group of individuals irrespective of theirâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Reasons against Sexuality According to McClintock and Anne (23) groups that are against sexuality with regards to its education in schools argue that such kind of education grabs parental rights, and it encourages premarital immoral sexual promiscuity among the young people. These groups that only advocate for offer abstinence programs that instill shame and fear to discourage teenagers from engaging in sexual activities; they do not offer information regarding how teenagers can protect themselves from diseases and pregnancies. Arguments against Sexuality Opponents of sexuality suggest that sexuality education causes sexual experimentation because the educators do not have the required skills to handle the issue. Some sexuality programs are also considered to begin too early in life when kids cannot understand the issues, and it makes the opponents feel that parents should be the right people to handle sex education for their children. To some extent, the education of sexuality gets viewed as too controversial to get handled by schools and institutions. The opponents believe that the controversial nature of the subject has made people not to acquire moral attitudes from the programs making the sexuality education a failure (Sprecher and Susan, 33). They also argue that it is not right to teach the young children all the details regarding sexual intercourse
